Paul asks…
Is it possible to 1) Buy a chopper frame and 2) Just transfer all the parts from my bike to it?
I own a 2001 Yamaha V Star, and sometimes I feel my bike is too short [I'm 6'1] and would like to feel the bike extending forward, chopper style. I want to have a frame made, and I was wondering if it was possible just to get the frame made and then just “transfer” [for the lack for a better term] the parts from my bike to the frame…I know some things must be purchased new [like forks perhaps?] but I don’t know which ones. What extra expenses does my idea bring about?
Jon, you always take the time to answer my oh so stupid questions, thanks for taking the time man! I didn’t know I could just buy a raked triple clamp and get it over with…I’d be happy to here a lot more suggestions though! My idea of a new frame is quite too expensive, whereas Jon’s suggestion seem to be the way to go, but I do want to change the overall look of my bike.
Chopper Motorcycle Staff answers:
To answer your question, yes but you’ll need to get a new title that matches the frame number. Bikes are titled by frame number and not engine number.
The bike feels too short? Maybe the bike isn’t too shortm but you just set too far forward. If you get a lower seat, you’ll set lower and the bike will seem longer. A seat that lets you set a bit further back will also make the bike seem longer. Tilting the handlebars back or getting ones with more pull back will let you lean back, making the bike seem longer. Putting on highway pegs or forward controls with any of the above will accentuate the impression of being longer and lower.
The raked out triple clamps will certainly make the bike longer, but with your present forks, it’ll also lower the front of the bike, reducing ground clearance. Longer fork tubes would be needed to offset that. The raked out clamps will make the bike want to turn into a turn, especially at low speeds. That means that when you’re making a slow turn in a parking lot, you’re going to have to physically turn the fork outward and hold it there. When parked, the front wheel will tend to flop to one side or the other on its own. The old 700 Suzuki Intruders had a raked out fork from the factory and they were a real pain fighting its tendency to turn in. The later ones used a much taller front wheel and it was either that or revised steering geometry that made them handle a bit better than the orginal ones (had the first year Intruder).

Joseph asks…
Looking to build a chopper from a Buell donor bike. Who has the best/easiest frame and parts to work with?
Who has the best support, price etc.
Chopper Motorcycle Staff answers:
Building a chopper is about using what youve got. If your frame is not in good enough condition go with a softail…Just please keep it in the family.
