Faq – Help About Custom Motorcycle Parts For Honda

Sandy asks…
Motorcycle Repair Cost?
HI, I got into an accident with my motorcycle it is a 1981 Honda cm 400 Custom. So it is old. The shop I brought it to explained that they are going to have to charge me to get the estimate because they will have to look at and maybe disasemble the bike a little. They also have to research if parts can be found since the bike is 30 years old. They are also going to take pictures of what the damage is etc. They charge 60 bucks for labor. I am wondering if this sounds normal to pay for this kind of thing. I thought (at least with vehicle exterior damage) that it is free to get an estimate.
know that I am not getting it actually fixed. I am just getting an estimate for insurance purposes. THe shop charges 60 bucks an hour for an estimate. My actuall question is how many hours should it take to get a good estimate

Nothing is free at a shop. Your paying for the mechanics time (labor) and in my opinion 60$ an hour is dirt cheap. My shop’s rates are 80$ an hour, my old shop was 90$. They are just charging you 1 hr for a quick tear down and assessment…that’s a very fair price.

William asks…
Registering completely homemade tricycle?
I am currently building a completely custom fabricated tricycle. the entire chassis will be fabricated by myself. the parts that will not be made by me are; the front forks, the engine & trans, wheels, rear axle & drive chain, gauges, lights..
the vehicle will have all legal brake lights, head lights, horn, turn signals, muffler, and seat belt.
Engine is out of an 80′s Honda ATC 200cc, as is the rear axle and drive chain, and brakes. front forks & brakes will be off a scrapped motorcycle. i have sales receipts for all non custom parts, as well as steel for the chassis.
I want to make this road legal, so i need to apply for a vin number and register it. does anyone know if this is possible? as far as i can tell, it meets all requirements for road use, but because it is a custom vehicle, i need to register it. I live in Washington state. any help would be great, thanks.

Helen asks…
customizing a motorcycle?
I bought a ’78 honda cb400 that has been chopped a bit for a rat/bobber bike. Still needs finishing but the engine doesnt run currently. How far customizing can I go with this bike?
If Im going to go custom I wanna go all out. Extreme extended forks and a new engine. Are chop shops willing to do whatever I want. Say I wanted a ducati 999 engine in it. Would they do it? I know all shops are different so i would need to find out from them exactly. But how does the process work? Do I just tell them what I want and they do it or are there restrictions? How about as far as finding parts or even engines? My job or theres?

Money, money, money that you provide can handle almost anything- including paying off inspector for rebuild license. As a practical matter- get engine running and rest road usable. I have a sort of mouse/rat bike(flattrack term) 1982 Honda CM400 I use as a training bike- salvage job with Yamaha forks and a few other bits and pieces- with new tires and battery I have about $500.00 in it, runs decent and lady learning to ride is happy with it. All out custom on yours wouldn’t be considered the wisest choice- but it’s your money. A decent little commuter/utility/trainermouse could be made reasonably cheap.
